The funny thing is that I don't particularly have much interest in writing gay characters as het. I can't think of one that particularly interests me. But... sometimes people get interested in a particular dynamic, you know? Sometimes people look at a character and they just want to see what would happen if this character and this character were in a romantic relationship, even if that would never happen in the show. I mean, isn't that part of what fanfic is all about? Experimenting with these characters that we see? Playing around with these things in a way that's totally non-canonical, imagining what could be?

I just don't see the need to shut off this particular arc of shipping, and no others, even those that are equally non-canonical. If someone is using that to be a weirdo or a bigot, it makes more sense to me to criticize them for being a weirdo and a bigot, rather than for writing the wrong pairing.
