I'd like some nod to the canon so that the writer isn't just conveniently missing out some important piece of characterization, but it's still workable. Maybe they have an exception, or maybe they're just hooking up even if there's no real chemistry, or maybe they're in denial, or maybe they've got a friends-with-benefits thing going on with someone because they just really need to get their rocks off, or maybe they're bisexual and either don't know it or have felt pressured to pick a damn side.

But it's workable, and I find the argument that you can't do that in your fic/art/shipping to be both stupid and uncreative.
