Re: Fanartists, at least, are attention whores when they do this IMO

Hmm, I'm not sure if you are still reading this but I thought of something in the mean time:

There is a certain famous comic book artist on facebook who held a contest for followers to redraw designs for his ORIGINAL character. He ended up picking one that gave him a bunch of different versions which he liked because they made the character look updated while staying true to his personality in spirit. Now this artist may get a job from said comic book creator as a result of this, or he may use it as part of his portfolio. This is one example of how someone may base their career off of something like fanart. Fanart is an expression of your love for their work, it is not merchandise you are selling en masse to the public. In fact many people find fanart flattering.

Getting a job working for a company because of your artistic skill and starting your own business in an attempt to get a piece of the pie for yourself are two vastly different things.
