Re: What's up with everyone on tumblr thinking they have depression

Depression is one of the most common (maybe THE most common, idk) mental illnesses someone can have. Virtually everyone will have a depressive episode (I think that's the term?) at some point in their lives, and teens and twenty-somethings are at an especially high risk for it because of all of the major life changes they're likely to be going through.

Not only is the end of puberty causing all sorts of chaos on their body and mood, they're also dealing with the huge shift from being a kid to being an adult. For many of them, they're going from having virtually no responsibility beyond 'put the dishes in the dishwasher and do your homework every day' to 'balance college with a part-time job, hobbies, and trying to figure out just who the fuck you are as a person now that the world looks at you as a grown-up'. Obviously some people manage all that while remaining happy as a clam, but just speaking from personal experience all of my friends dealt with a lot of depression for much of high school and into their twenties.

It's not that they were snowflakes. It's that shit's tough to deal with.

But it's meant to be tough shit to deal with. It's completely normal and it's a perfectly normal and understandable reaction. I wouldn't necessarily call every single person who has trouble dealing with those things "depressed" though.

But that's the issue with needing to label and medicate everything, even normal and expected human responses to stressors, rather than instill better coping and resilience.

But that's not clinical depression. That's the normal experience of growing up.
