This. In a majority of the fandoms I've written for, I've shipped two characters as completely monogamous, the only people in the world for each other, etc., even though I am not personally monogamous, because it makes sense for the characters, the world, and their dynamic. In at least one, though, three characters had chemistry. In others, I actually can't imagine the characters in question being monogamous, so I might ship two but assume that they occasionally have sex with other people.

It is entirely dependent on personalities and cultural contexts.
