Soulmate stuff is both understandably appealing because almost everyone longs for someone to love them that much, on some level, while at the same time its incredibly dangerous because it can promote unhealthy relationships by romanticizing all sorts of problematic behaviors or setting unrealistic ideals that people try to achieve themselves by "unconditionally" loving toxic jerks.

It's really funny to me that someone saying this gets no comments, but if you were to say the exact same thing about rape fantasies, you'd have a ton of people coming in to scream "FICTION IS NOT REALITY YOU DUMB DUMB."

I think the difference is that people/society are already aware that rape is bad and unpleasant and so on, and still have rape fantasies anyway. They really do know what the difference is, and have had to regularly reconcile the two facts (rape is bad, but I also like the idea of being raped).

While there's some pushback on the idea of soulmates -- and a LOT of pushback on overly co-dependent relationships -- I think society in general has a positive view of finding soulmates and pair-bonding and meeting "the one". Lifelong monogamy is still by far the preferred / ideal lifestyle.

Sure, people are free to like what they like and kink what they kink, but most people who kink rape get patronizingly told that rape is bad (something they already know) while people who kink soulmates don't have to do that self-reflection because society also kinks soulmates. That's what I think at least?

Very well put.

But women love being raped. Why do you keep pushing the outdated idea that rape is abad and unpleasant?

Mercedes Lackey wrote this as a subplot into one of her Valdemar novels. It was really interesting.
