Re: Political grumbling
(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)What concerns me, especially, is those people who say that violence should be met with violence. I saw a lot of that on Tumblr after Darren Wilson wasn't indicted and I just can't help but think how incredibly irresponsible that it is to say.
There's a damn good reason you don't go the route of violence: because if your opponent is more numerous, better armed, and better trained -- they will SLAUGHTER you. The only thing you're going to accomplish is getting people (likely your friends and family) killed.
The argument seemed to be that white people had dominated the world through violence and so poc had no reason to avoid this route. But it's such a stupid argument because they whole reason that white people utilized violence was because they COULD -- they had the technological means to back it up.
If you're being oppressed by someone more powerful than you then the LAST thing you want to do is become violent. Because you won't win -- otherwise, groups facing HORRIFIC oppression (like the Jews under the Nazis or blacks during slavery) would have successfully risen up and fought back given that they had very little to lose. But they didn't. Not because they were cowardly or lacked resolve or had "chosen" to go the peaceful route but because they literally COULDN'T.
