Oh, it would be a happy ending, as the two main characters would get (and stay) together.

In general there would just be the matter-of-fact attitude that, with no guarantee that a matching mark even exists during one's lifetime and even if it does, it could be anyone in the world, there's no point in waiting for the next-to-impossible chance of finding that one perfect biological match. (Because in my universe, the marks signify perfect genetic compatibility, but as there's been thousands of years of myths and legends before science figured that out, the marks are still associated with the romantic idea of a soulmate).

And the morale of the story is that we find our own happiness and don't need divine intervention to find love, because I'm a sap at heart.

I really do have most of this figured out.
