I guess it depends on how much the good outweighs the bad, and vice versa. Also how incompatible the bad things are with who you are as a person and your own convictions.

I completely agree. (And couldn't have said it half as well as you did.) IMO this is the kind of thing you need to take on a case by case basis. No one is perfect and you won't always agree on everything, but I think everyone has deal-breakers. Even if you love or like someone, that doesn't necessarily mean that interacting with that person is going to be beneficial for you. If it gets to the point where the bad far outweighs the good, and you no longer get any sort of pleasure from conversing with this person, imo that would be the time to step back.
