(Anonymous) 2014-12-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)In my first fanfic for a particular fandom, I used a cardboard version of a particular villain. I didn't mean to antagonize anyone by this -- I was just telling a story -- but apparently a person who liked that character has borne a grudge ever since. (Never mind that I subsequently made edits to the initial story (and wrote other stories) that presented the villain in a much more nuanced, sympathetic light: nope, as OP says in the secret, "screw up once and you're fucked forever.") That angry fan never forgave me, it seems, for when the two of us wound up in the same fandom over a decade later, they made sure that everyone in their clique froze me out and treated me as a complete non-entity. I wrote to them once or twice, hoping to open a discussion and clear the air, but they never responded.
Ultimately, I realize that there are some people who have a desperate, constant need for BadPerson to fling things at (to help them feel like a GoodPerson, I suppose); such people sometimes need to find everything problematic in order to build enough rage to release their hounds. There's nothing I can do to change this, and so, as long as I know I've been as courteous and respectful of others as I can, I try not to be too broken up when I'm not treated that way in return.
