It's not like I'm living in some tolerant utopia, I'm not surprised that people hold these views. But where I live those aren't the socially acceptable views, so people hold these privately.

In my experience IRL expressions of those views are more likely microaggressions or ignorant remarks and not the slur-filled hate speech you'd expect in a youtube comment section. If you'd outright say that you think gay people will go to hell in polite company, you probably will be met with uncomfortable silence. So yes, people posting a racist/sexist/homophobic statement on their facebook wall where their boss might see it puzzles me.

I hardly live in Klansburg, myself, but bigots are remarkably terrible at telling that you're not one of them (unless you're a part of the group they're denigrating - and even then, the sexists fail a good part of the time). My last job was pretty much the worst I've had - my boss would make racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-immigrant (despite being an immigrant himself), etc remarks to me, the other workers, the customers (except the ones who were the subject of said remarks)...I overheard customers saying such things to each other (thus I learned the slur 'sandnigger')...

That's a lot of why I quit that job in the middle of a shift.

I'm sorry to hear about your boss. I hope you'll be lucky enough to work with decent human beings in the future.

My limited exposure to unashamedly bigoted people might just be because of my limited exposure to people in general, though I'm not looking forward to possibly having my faith in basic human decency proven wrong in the future.

I hope you manage to avoid that. Both because getting to keep your hope for humanity is good, and it'd be nice if humanity continued to improve.
