Badhistory is the best. It's the only subreddit I browse with any sort of regularity. There's some hilarious gems in there.

Check out /r/trollxchromosomes if you haven't! Also glorious hilarity and a really fantastic community. I pretty much camp there. While the topics are very different, I've found the /r/badhistory and /r/trollxchromosomes attitudes to be generally similar in terms of how they roll, and it's nice having places like that to go to.

I know a lot of people link /r/TumblrInAction but I actually don't like it there and don't really feel welcome - I think it goes too far off into the other end of 'yeah someone said they were a demigirl once, and that's stupid, so all non-binary genders are stupid' and it's like no... that's not how it works at all... never mind this place then.

Luckily there are plenty of other places that I prefer. If I find somewhere on Reddit I don't like it's easy to just avoid it. It's also really great for fandom discussion and keeping on top of things and what's coming out. Much better than Tumblr since I can just visit a subreddit that's only about the fandom as opposed to go to people's blogs where it's like endless reblogs of unrelated things and various other stuff from god know's where. Believe it or not there's even a fairly active roleplaying community on Reddit, though I don't really do that.

Some good fan communities that I enjoy are /r/marvel, /r/harrypotter (surprisingly hardcore), /r/asoiaf (incredibly discussion heavy), and /r/rpg and /r/dnd. There are others, of course - these are just a few that I've found are really good and right up my alley.

Yeah, I feel you on /r/TumblrinAction. It isn't a wecloming place from what I've seem. In fact, the userbase there can sometimes go so far into that end, that it's actually a pretty shitty place. I'm all for mocking and poking fun at ridiculous stuff on tumblr, but it goes a bit too far.

I like that about reddit. You can actually have fandom discussions there. Wait, there's a roleplaying community on there? I didn't know that.

r/asoiaf is great! It has been a while since I've browsed it though. I mostly go there for the ridiculous fan theories, like Bolt-On.

I prefer to stick to the positive subreddits rather than the mocking ones, mostly, which is why the list I gave looks like it does. /r/TumblrInAction isn't focused at building up anything as much as it is at laughing at stuff. Even if that's fine once in a while, it feels sort of toxic to stay there for too long.

For roleplaying there are a lot of pages, but the quality... well, let's just say it varies a little. /r/Roleplay/ is probably the most 'hub'ish place, but quite often I've seen people set up private subreddits or small things just for a couple of people since Reddit's posting system makes longform stuff pretty easy to go on with. There are also more fandom specific things like /r/BendingRP/ and /r/PotterPlayRP with a few other smaller communities here and there.

/r/asoiaf is the best for hilarious tinfoil. Bolt-on will probably never come through, but damned if I don't have a soft spot in my heart for it. I'm also fond of Ajorah Ahai - sure, totally (most likely) untrue, but for a while it's fun to believe. There's some great discussion from users like /u/cantuse as well, though - their Stannis manifesto at https://cantuse.wordpress.com/2014/09/30/the-mannifesto/ is one of the most severely impressive pieces of fandom meta I've ever seen.

Oh, I feel so silly now. Of couse the roleplay subbredfit would just be r/roleplay. Thank you for the insight. It's been years since I've roleplayed and I've been looking to getting back into it.

Bolt-on is just the best tinfoil theory out there. Ajorah Ahai is another one of my absolute favorites. They've alsi got some awesome theories that are a bit more plausible. I'm gonna give this essay read asap.

For /u/cantuse's stuff, I'd actually suggest starting with the Night Lamp theory at https://cantuse.wordpress.com/2014/08/28/the-night-lamp-revisited-the-wrath-of-the-old-and-the-new/ which is much more readable - the giant fucking manifesto kind of follows from there to elaborate on other pieces of the campaign. While waiting for the next book to come out (which may be who knows when) reading this is a great appetizer or really gets me excited for what might come.

Let me know how you find it, I really enjoyed the Night Lamp and it's one of the most plausible bits of speculation from fans that I've seen. Another piece of meta that I enjoy but find somewhat less likely is this Jon/Sansa post: http://blindestspot.tumblr.com/post/50820774456/jonxsansa regardless of whether it happens, it's a good bit of discussion on the themes of the story and comes off as definitely plausible.

Oh, very neat! I think I've heard this one in parts but not in full, definitely remember the Blood Raven connection being made before but I must've missed this. That was fun to read, thanks for reccing it!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! There's several takes on that theory, but that one is my absolute favorite.
