I'm aromantic, and I hate this shit partly because of that. Like I am a huge shipper, and I write and read a ton of shippy fic myself, but the idea that THE WORLD IS LITERALLY BLACK AND WHITE UNTIL YOU MEET THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE just makes me cringe. Many of us are plenty fulfilled without a romantic partner.

I'm not very comfortable with the idea of 'soulmates'* anyway. I can get behind some nice red string of fate imagery. I even love the idea of a one true love, love transcends everything, etc. trope for some of my more 'epic' ships. But when people continually push the soulmate idea it gives the impression that 'fate' supersedes free will, and I don't like that.

*Soulmates in the almost supernatural sense. Soulmates as in ideal partners? That's great, and I'll totally use the term for that.
