Here's the thing though anon- it is ok to like problematic things...the point is acknowledging that they are problematic. Moffat hate can and does get extreme but that doesn't mean the criticisms aren't valid. Maybe your friends would stop giving you a hard time if you acknowledged that their criticism of Moffat/his writing/attitude/whatever is valid and you do understand their points but that you still enjoy his shows/writing/whatever and that if they could kindly stop dragging you down because its ruining your enjoyment/relationship with them.

-10 points for your comment about feminism (it kind of sounds like you're willfully missing the point)

Basically you're allowed to watch the show provided that you add some quality self flagellation. Oh but you don't like the pain and just want to watch the show unencumbered? That's P.R.O.B.L.E.M.A.T.I.C...

-10 for thinking you have the right to tell people what and how they're allowed to enjoy their escapist TV series. You, Anon, are a perfect embodiment of feminism.

lol get angry

AYRT No I'm not telling people how to enjoy their escapist tv series,I'm trying to provide a bridge for anon to deal with her friends who have (valid) problems with Moffat.

Also you seem to be implying that people who do acknowledge problematic elements in media aren't also looking for an "escapist tv series"...maybe the things they need "escapism" from are exactly the kind of problematic things that keep popping up in Moffat's (in this case) writing (sexism, misogyny, 'no homo' etc).

-10 for also willfully misintepreting.

And here's my thing: a lot of people, especially those who like to use the word "problematic", don't care if you've acknowledged that they are making valid points. The keep harping on and on about it even after you've told them "I know about this, but I still like the show and it would be nice if you could stop constantly harshing my squee", because they think that unless you do fandom exactly like they do, you're doing it wrong.

I've grown really tired of this "how to enjoy things that are problematic" meme. Some people don't want to analyze every part of the media they're consuming. They just want to escape because maybe, just maybe, their life sucks ass and they need a tiny corner of the world where they aren't constantly reminded of the fact that the world sucks.

The problem with the word "problematic" is that it it puts this sort of academic veneer over things that cause pain to real people.

Just because it's a happy place for the OP doesn't mean that it is for everybody, and that their friends are just criticizing it because that's what all the cool SJWs are doing this week. A lot of people have had their squee majorly harshed by Steven Moffat's vision of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who isn't our fun place anymore, and losing something like that really sucks.

don't care if you've acknowledged that they are making valid points
Well I'm not one of those people and have not really encountered many of those people with the small exception of a vocal minority so I would still encourage OP to at least try, sometimes people just need an obvious "hey I get it but please enough already" to get the point.

I'd also direct you towards my reply to the comment above- sometimes the things people are trying to find some "escapism" from are exactly the kind of things that are popping up in Moffat's writing. As somebody who is quite involved and passionate about social justice I do find it kind of depressing when something, yes, problematic pops up in a show I'm otherwise enjoying, because sexism and racism are the kind of things I'm trying to get away from when I want some escapism...you can see how this is a difficult thing yeah? Its not just all the "tumblr sjws" that all these lj folk like to hate on just making noise because they can, the majority of the time its people who are hurt by sexism/racism/whatever on a daily basis so in fact the "tiny corner of the world where they aren't constantly reminded of the fact that the world sucks" is kind of reminding them why the world sucks.

But whose say the OP agrees with them? They might not and that's why their 'friend's are grinding them down with the hate?
