I was writing a soulmate AU for my current fandom, one where the soulmates don't get together.

Then I realized no one wants to read that. I didn't post it. I do find it an interesting concept, but even if I signaled really strongly from the first chapter that they WEREN'T GOING TO GET TOGETHER it would still annoy my readers as that's the convention for that kind of story.

Perhaps I'm underestimating readers, but I think not. If I read a soulbond story where they didn't get together at the end, I'd be disappointed, no matter how clear it was made that it wasn't going to happen, and how much I even personally dislike the convention--"easy mode" is about how I see it. Mostly it's because if I'm reading a soulbond story to start with, it's because I've turned my brain off and I want pure cliched shmoop.

Soulbond stories are not where anyone goes to have their expectations challenged.
