Uh, personally, I'd like to see the token POC more than an all-white cast. Because at least then there would be representation, even if it is bad. And, at least I hope, I would notice that it was just a token character and be uncomfortable about it. Whereas I'm not sure I'd be made as uncomfortable if the cast is all white. And so, both options are racist, but I'd rather the option that is more noticeable to me.

I would go the other way, actually. I think I'd rather have no representation than bad representation, which I think is what the question is trying to ask. I'm actually POC myself, but I feel like an all-white cast isn't necessarily racist. Some places / locations / time periods don't have people from different races or genders there and that's fine, as long as the absence of POCs isn't egregious all that means is that they aren't there. Them not existing in this world or setting doesn't say anything positive or negative, it's just neutral.

On the other hand if it's an all-white cast with A TOKEN MINORITY I would probably just cringe my way through it. Give me good rep or no rep, bad representation is like... ughhh, go away, this is actively ruining my enjoyment of everything because the believability just dropped to negative levels. I'd be way more comfortable just being like 'sure ok, POC characters probably exist in some other part of the world and are having their own awesome adventures, no biggie' than having a POC character canonically be THE TOKEN ONE.

I mean I get where you're coming from, just that I don't really see it the same way! It's a pretty interesting question when you think about it.

I totally get that. And you're a better person to answer than me. And I probably should start noticing it more when there are no POC members in the cast.

da

as a poc i agree. the worst part about the token minority existing is that you're expected to love them whether or not they're good characters because you're the same race. then whiteknight sjw get all up in there writing tedious and forced fic for the sake of inclusion because NOT loving the coc solely for being the coc is "racist" and its like fuck you. not liking that the character of my race on the tv show is poorly written and flat as hell doesn't make me secretly racist against myself

Yes yes yes this. A badly written character is a badly written character. Unless you're going to do it well, just don't do it. Also POCs just not existing because of setting reasons is better than them being awkwardly shoehorned in and then everyone watching just takes everything they do as some weird meta statement on race. Godddd I just want to enjoy shows sometimes without dealing with that rubbish. If I want shows full of POC I can actually just watch foreign programming (WHICH I DO).

I mean I get the whole 'look if the setting is present day and diverse, it looks really weird when the main cast is all like precisely one type of person with minor variations' and the problematic aspects of that make sense to me. But SHOEHORNING THE TOKEN SPARKLY MINOR RACE OR SEXUALITY in doesn't actually fix the problem because what happens is that they end up being defined ALMOST ENTIRELY by their race or whatever which is just a big huge no. It's better to me if it's just not addressed, you can just be like 'yes we see that's a question, but it's not one we're aiming to tackle at this point in time'. I'd be totally cool with that!
