Yeah, casuals really can ruin a fandom for those who really love the source material. Maybe keep her love of it in mind and respect that. It's incredibly irritating to have to interact with people who haven't even seen the show or read the books when you're in a fandom specifically because you love the source material. Think of it that way. It's her space, and you are really just a casual visitor.

OP

I definitely understand the frustration of more casual fans, especially if they dominate a fandom to the point where it's hard to get in-depth discussion or find good fanfics/art. If you have a strong passion for a fandom, it can be similarly frustrating to deal with people spreading inaccurate info or in general not sharing your enthusiasm as much. (When I was in the Pokemon fandom, I wanted to slap everyone who started in with DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE LAVENDER TOWN MUSIC KILLING ALL THOSE KIDS OMG after the FIFTY-THOUSANDTH-TIME that was DISPROVED, FFS DO TWO SECONDS OF RESEARCH.)

However, I feel like you're giving casuals an unfair reputation. Having a vast enthusiasm for a product does not make the entirety of the fandom 'your' space. Fandom has always been a spectrum of members more casual and those more in-depth, and it doesn't belong to any of them. (In fact, I'd go as far as to say gatekeeping 'prove you REALLY LOVE it' extremism on the other end of the spectrum has done about as much to 'ruin' several fandoms for people as frustrating poorly-informed casuals have.)

I have no intention of disrespecting or discrediting her love for it. I respect the fact that she's dedicated a remarkable level of time and energy and love into the fandom that I cannot hope to match and won't attempt to, and I'm glad that she's found a fandom she genuinely adores. But at the same time, I'm unhappy because she's treating my being a casual fan as something that she has to 'fix', in spite of me repeatedly saying that I have no interest, and tends to act extremely patronizing and rude about it... but still seeks me out to talk about fandom because she's excited to know someone else in real life who does. She doesn't hold any respect towards my desire to just sort of like the thing.

Tl;dr: It ain't your thing, stop acting like it's your thing.

DA--yeah, stop having fun the way you like to, OP! Fandom is only for Speshul Snowflakes who have EARNED it!

JFC, Fandom Is Srs BSns irritates me. When the friend creates her own source material, then she can try to decide how people enjoy it. In the meantime, OP, have your fun. Maybe try to remember hopeless humourless pedants are probably that way for a reason, and be gentle.

That's a ridiculous attitude to take.
