My condolences you have, young padawan.

Yeah, I sort of get that. I saw the original trilogy over 15 times, and I still can't quote the damn things - I'm just not the kind of fan who remembers film literally scene-by-scene. I don't care to. I find I don't really mesh with fans who do.

The only thing that annoys me is when people say they're big fans, but you'll go on about something that really doesn't take obsession to know, and they'll have NO clue what you mean because by "I love that" they really mean they saw the movie a million years ago or read the first two chapters of the first book or something. But even that's not really their fault... it's just a bit awkward.

I'm that way about some things, but even if I get aggravated when someone gets a canon detail wrong I keep it to myself. I realize not everyone is nitpicky like I am.

OP here

I'd like to clarify here that I actually have no issue with fans who love absorbing all the material and memorizing tiny details, or ones that get annoyed at inaccurate information. I'm that way with a lot of other fandoms.

I get annoyed at the attitude of disdain for 'casuals' and the NEED to smugly correct everyone or go on long tangents even when you've been told to stop or even when it's making other people clearly uncomfortable.

Re: OP here

Yeah, OP, I totally understand. There's a certain kind of possessive, pedantic, "I'm a better fan" attitude that's about judging how other people have fun, and it's both really irritating and just a little bit pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, casuals really can ruin a fandom for those who really love the source material. Maybe keep her love of it in mind and respect that. It's incredibly irritating to have to interact with people who haven't even seen the show or read the books when you're in a fandom specifically because you love the source material. Think of it that way. It's her space, and you are really just a casual visitor.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely understand the frustration of more casual fans, especially if they dominate a fandom to the point where it's hard to get in-depth discussion or find good fanfics/art. If you have a strong passion for a fandom, it can be similarly frustrating to deal with people spreading inaccurate info or in general not sharing your enthusiasm as much. (When I was in the Pokemon fandom, I wanted to slap everyone who started in with DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE LAVENDER TOWN MUSIC KILLING ALL THOSE KIDS OMG after the FIFTY-THOUSANDTH-TIME that was DISPROVED, FFS DO TWO SECONDS OF RESEARCH.)

However, I feel like you're giving casuals an unfair reputation. Having a vast enthusiasm for a product does not make the entirety of the fandom 'your' space. Fandom has always been a spectrum of members more casual and those more in-depth, and it doesn't belong to any of them. (In fact, I'd go as far as to say gatekeeping 'prove you REALLY LOVE it' extremism on the other end of the spectrum has done about as much to 'ruin' several fandoms for people as frustrating poorly-informed casuals have.)

I have no intention of disrespecting or discrediting her love for it. I respect the fact that she's dedicated a remarkable level of time and energy and love into the fandom that I cannot hope to match and won't attempt to, and I'm glad that she's found a fandom she genuinely adores. But at the same time, I'm unhappy because she's treating my being a casual fan as something that she has to 'fix', in spite of me repeatedly saying that I have no interest, and tends to act extremely patronizing and rude about it... but still seeks me out to talk about fandom because she's excited to know someone else in real life who does. She doesn't hold any respect towards my desire to just sort of like the thing.

Tl;dr: It ain't your thing, stop acting like it's your thing.

DA--yeah, stop having fun the way you like to, OP! Fandom is only for Speshul Snowflakes who have EARNED it!

JFC, Fandom Is Srs BSns irritates me. When the friend creates her own source material, then she can try to decide how people enjoy it. In the meantime, OP, have your fun. Maybe try to remember hopeless humourless pedants are probably that way for a reason, and be gentle.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a ridiculous attitude to take.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
Casuals aren't the problem for me, it's the people who act as if they're hardcore fans and produce endless amounts of fanwork but haven't seen a single episode of the damn show/film/read the book. Like, why are you here in the first place? GTFO.

Usually, because that fandom is the popular fandom of the month and they're attention whores.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT Yeah, you're probably right there. It makes them look like idiots though and clogs up everyone else's fanspace with shallow, fickle crap.
