I can't speak for every Jewish singer, but I'm an atheist and not remotely sympathetic to Christianity. But I genuinely like Christmas music. Well, at least a lot of the traditional carols and stuff. They're beautiful. I don't have to believe a story is true or has moral significance to enjoy singing pretty songs about the nativity.

I'm similar. Most of my favorite Christmas songs are super religious ones like O Holy Night, even though I don't remotely believe their messages. They're beautiful and dramatic and I like that.

Same. O Holy Night, Silent Night, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen... such amazing songs. If I could sing, and if I were famous, I'd happily make a Christmas album with those and other traditional carols. Doesn't mean I believe it, or am resentful of the oppressive regime of Christians or something crazy like tha.

Me too, I'm Buddhist, but there is no way I'm not listening to Christmas carols at Christmastime. They're gorgeous.

Yeah, totally the same.

And a Christmas carol =/= a prayer. It's no more untrue to me than singing a love song when you're not in love.

Thanks for that comparison. Because to me, a lot of these carols ARE prayers, which is why I have such dissonance when I KNOW the person singing the lines don't feel the same way about them. Comparing it to love songs actually helps me line it up a little more.

And yes, all of these replies are things I know and I know I'm being a patronising asshole and I know not everyone feels the same way, and there was a line in the secret about anyone having the right to a slice of the commercialism pie (these songs pay the bills), and... I know I'm irrational. I know I'm an asshole. I know there are all kinds of issues coming out of this secret.

All of that is why this is a secret.

You're not an asshole - I was just trying to give another perspective. That not all these people are "selling out" or have equally strong feeling about it as you do.

I'm not a Christian but I feel the same way. I don't think people should stop singing them, I just don't know how they don't feel weird. I like them and *I* feel weird. :D
