lolwhat

They do not see it as "continuing Christian oppression" FFS.

I think it's safe to say that you don't know how these individuals feel about Christmas and Christianity unless they've said so.

It's Christmas music. They do it to make a quick buck (and because most of those are in public domain).

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for every Jewish singer, but I'm an atheist and not remotely sympathetic to Christianity. But I genuinely like Christmas music. Well, at least a lot of the traditional carols and stuff. They're beautiful. I don't have to believe a story is true or has moral significance to enjoy singing pretty songs about the nativity.

I really think that you're overthinking this. Recording a Christmas album is an easy way for a musician to make money.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I like this interesting Christmas-y spin on an old wank. I love wank that gets in the holiday spirit

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I can't with this secret, especially with how many Christmas songs were written by Jews. That must bother you a lot, OP.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-12-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
You realize they could just actually LIKE those songs, right? I'm an agnostic atheist who loves Christmas carols and Christmas - which I will be spending with my protestant dad, my catholic mother, her Jewish best friend, and my fairly hardcore atheist boyfriend. Not everything religious is political to everyone.

Jews who sing Christmas songs do it because they want to, not because they have to. But I admit that it's sometimes hard for me to reconcile my faith with my incredible love for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

LOL.

Short answer: no. Christmas carols are not continuing Christian oppression.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it wouldn't be Christmas without some Christian person being a patronizing douche towards Jewish people

I'm a Jewish singer (strictly smalltime), and I've been known to bust out some Ave Maria and Silent Night for the right audience. When I told my singing teacher I wanted to learn Ave Maria she was like, "ah, looking to pick up some money, huh?" and she was not wrong. I sing to people what they want to hear, and it doesn't hurt to make a buck.

The only time a Christmas Album put out by a Jew bothered me was when Barbra Streisand titled hers "Christmas Memories". Seriously, Babs? Who did you think you're fooling?

Uh, dude, no. Speaking as a non-Christian.

In fact, Christmas carols are one of the nicest and most easygoing and positive parts of Christianity, IMO. All hope for the future and stuff, no judgeiness and dogma.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... can people oppress themselves on the behalf of a group they don't belong to? Because this is what you're proposing here. It doesn't really make sense.

OMG (for real) - if you have to reach this far to find something to feel guilty about maybe YOU should convert to Judaism.
Sheesh.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure someone will have already pointed this out, but a lot of Christmas carols you likely know well were written by Jewish composers. Or played by Jewish musicians.

And anyway, Jesus was Jewish. So it's all good.

Oh, come on. No one is oppressing this artists when it comes to doing a Christmas album. They do it because it's an almost guaranteed money maker. Like you mentioned Streisand. Her album, fittingly enough "A Christmas Album" sold over five million copies. It's one of her best selling albums to date. And in a time where people are downloading songs left and right, Christmas albums are still being bought legally. It's a great way for an artist or a band to recoup any bad selling albums they might have had in the previous year or two.

You do realize that a lot of people celebrate Christmas in a secular fashion, right? They take the time to put up a tree, eat too much, spend time with the family, and play Christmas music without focusing on the religious aspects of the holiday.

Personally, the capitalist in me congratulates anybody who can churn out another version of whatever saccharine Christmas song is in vogue at the moment and make a few dollars at it.

I loved christmas music even when I was a child thought that the way mum said we're not christian meant "christianity is evil." (she didn't mean that)
But I see them mostly as kinda neutral?

And there are ones that aren't anything to do with christianity.

Musicians make music either for the sake of music, or for the money, or both. I promise you, there aren't too many of us who get all worked up about singing songs, or playing music, that don't correspond to our particular chosen beliefs*. And if we do, most of us are smart enough to just shut up and deal with it and not make things difficult for the other musicians we're working with.
Christmas especially is a huge boon to musicians, so any musician would have to think long and hard about not taking advantage of that.

*Except maybe the ones who make niche careers out of singing about those beliefs, or those trying to make a Statement with their music, but even most of those will sing at least some maybe-it's-religious-maybe-it's-not songs from time to time.

I just thought I'd chip in. I'm an atheist and hearing super-religious christmas carols does make me mildly uncomfortable. Not badly or anything, but it's not something I enjoy.

Even so, it's gotta be a choice thing. If they make you uncomfortable, ;don't sing them? Christmas doesn't have to be a religious holiday, for me it's all about family. So, if I were to make an album, I'd be singing about that. (See Tim Minchin's "White Wine in the Sun" for the ultimate representation of how I see christmas. It's also super pretty).
