Starsky and Hutch is admittedly full of angst and h/c, but this's a bit over the top. I think they're a the place emotionally where thy can manage to overcome such tragedy and let the time heal the heart. They work on a dangerous work so they're kinda prepared for a bad outcome.
They're jfictional of course, so are open to any interpretation, but that's how it translated to me.

I agree. They're not ignorant or stupid, they know the risks of their job. I think they would have enough respect for each other to understand that the one who died wouldn't have wanted his friend to throw away his life for no reason just because he didn't want to face living without his partner.
