I kinda like to think the opposite - that if one of them died, the other would do his best to live twice as full and happy a life, in order to live for both of them and to keep his partner's legacy alive. They're one of those duos that are close enough that as long as one of them is alive, the other one's existence and influence is still implied even if he's dead.

I can definitely see the surviving one being grief-stricken enough to initially wish he was dead or have suicidal thoughts, though.

I agree with you, and I think there's something deeply horrible about the secret's implication that the truest kind of love is the kind where, if anything happened to your lover, there'd be nothing left in the world for you and you might as well be dead.

Yep, I can totally see that happening in canon for Starsky and Hutch. If it was ever going to be canon for a series, it would be S&H.

Starsky and Hutch is admittedly full of angst and h/c, but this's a bit over the top. I think they're a the place emotionally where thy can manage to overcome such tragedy and let the time heal the heart. They work on a dangerous work so they're kinda prepared for a bad outcome.
They're jfictional of course, so are open to any interpretation, but that's how it translated to me.

I agree. They're not ignorant or stupid, they know the risks of their job. I think they would have enough respect for each other to understand that the one who died wouldn't have wanted his friend to throw away his life for no reason just because he didn't want to face living without his partner.

They even may have made some preparations and left a message along the lines of what you've just said.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Do you imagine it as openly suicide or suicide by risk-taking behavior in a dangerous job?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly disagree. No matter how deeply they loved each other, or how intensely attached and entwined they are, I really only see this happening with characters who are in some way unstable or already depressed, or if the death was their fault or had some other extremely traumatic and unusual circumstances far beyond the expected risks of the job.

Which is a long way of saying that I think Hutch might have killed himself if Starsky had died in Sweet Revenge (because season-four-Hutch was not a stable person imo), but that's the only scenario I can think of because otherwise, they were not unstable or depressed. And definitely not if one of them sacrificed himself to save the other. The one who survived wouldn't waste his partner's sacrifice like that.
esteefee: Early Starsky & Hutch in black and white. They both have short hair and Starsky is staring at the camera like hes in the Office (molo)

Yeah, I disagree with OP as well. Hutch didn't even kill Gunther. He was pretty stable considering.

These guys live an exceedingly dangerous life and go through mountains of shit but still somehow survive it. Admittedly it's because they support each other, but in the final season they weren't as tight and they still managed okay.

They love each other to pieces but they have very strong core personalities. Maybe that's even why they are so great together.

I'm pretty sure I've seen that in fanfic multiple times over the decades.

My only death fic in this fandom was about one dealing with the other's death and going on and living anyway. I needed to write it, for some reason. There was no suicide. I don't know what would really have happened, and you're welcome to your opinion, but I don't think I agree, basically. :-)

Starsky has the most beautful eyes

OT, but I really love the background pic you have here. It's really evocative and well made with those deep shadows and their faces.

About the secret, I think that if one of them died, the other one would never be the same again and never totally recover (because their identities are so intertwined), but I don't think either of them would commit suicide. At most, they might go through a period of self-destructiveness or endangerment and get killed as a result due to bad luck. Maybe if one had a severe case of depression or PTSD or something and then he lost his best friend on top of that, then he might kill himself as a result of that mental illness. But not as they are in the show.

Cherishing and honoring a fallen partner's memory for as long as possible seems much more their style.

I don't know if I see the survivor *committing* suicide, but I definitely see their grief leading to recklessness, to not particularly caring if they made it out alive or not, and to taking more on-the-job risks, or to being willing to sacrifice their life for someone else in the line of duty. Not a lonely suicide at home, but a 'if I don't make it, then my partner will be waiting for me on the other side, and if I give my life saving someone, then I won't have any regrets at all dying today'.
