That doesn't weaken her. That doesn't weaken her at all. That makes her more human and realistic. It would weaken her if it made her less kickass. But in fact, it only makes her more so.

she's not human tho

mutatis mutandis

seeing as NO ONE in the movie seemed at all phased that she was female, i'm guessing that universe is a lot less sexist than ours. i don't see why she would be bothered? like i get where you're going (and also i disagree that it makes her weaker... just more complex)... guess i just disagree that she'd feel that way at all. insecure, sure. putting on bravado for show, sure. doing it because she's a female captain, eh. not really, imo.

And I understand where YOU'RE coming from. This is definitely one of those "mileage may vary" things.

Part of the reason I developed the idea was because of a quote from the official Treasure Planet artbook (that I unfortunately can't find now) that suggested she'd gotten some flack for being one of the youngest captains in the service, and I think it said that she was one of the few females in the navy as well, though I don't know if that played a part in the flack.

Maybe because, to you, it'd make her more relatable? I can't speak for everyone else, but, as much as I love the super-badass women characters, I just can't see myself in them.

Very loosely related, but seeing her reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahVKiBDMBHw

Dear lord, that was brilliant.

She does a lot of edit/spliced amvs They're interesting to look at!

I don't think that would weaken her at all. The best fictional captains are sometimes insecure about their ability to command, and some of them chronically so. It never did Horatio Hornblower any harm in the eyes of his fans, and TOS-era Kirk was probably more loved for those moments like in Naked Time where he questioned his right and ability to be in charge. I'd think the fact that all of them, Amelia included, get up despite that fear and be thoroughly awesome on a regular basis makes them more, and not less, impressive.

I don't know that being female specifically would be the biggest reason for that insecurity, considering that her universe doesn't seem to be quite as biased as ours in that way. She's an alien on top of that, and who knows how gender is constructed by her species even aside from the general galactic society. But even if that was her specific fear, I still wouldn't think her less for overcoming it as spectacularly as she does.

I love you for mentioning Horatio Hornblower, because that series was what got me into the Napoleonic wars in the first place, and thus, why I love Amelia as much as I do.

But you definitely have a point. I guess part of my awkwardness about "weakening" her is a fear that I'd be looked down on as a bad feminist or something for doing it. Most of the time, I prefer to think of it as her being well-rounded, but the thought does occur to me sometimes.

Amping up the inner anguish of favorite kickass characters is one of the things fic is for.

OP, can you link some fic?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Because that sounds really interesting. I like character studies where the reasons for how they behave are "unveiled" or at least given another take. And I don't think it makes her weak, it reveals her weakness, which a lot of people can relate to (their life is a facade: do you really love yourself? Believe in yourself? Do you deserve to be where you are? Are you capable of what has been bestowed upon you? Shit...that just hit a nerve. lol? yeah. laugh it off.)

I'm afraid there isn't much fic. The small handful of fic that deals with Amelia's early life generally has her as a tomboy, with her spirit already fully in place.

This is the one fic I've found that comes close; http://archiveofourown.org/works/1093801

Heh. Honestly, part of the reason I made the secret was to try to get some recs myself.

Emma Thompson!

That's all.
