But the same thing can be said for absolutely anything. Take a look at your own interest and there is probably somebody who took it to the extreme and ruined their and possibly other people's lives.

Yes, that's true. But there isn't really an equivalent industry set up to exploit the beliefs of people who enjoy nature walks, and walking does have a measurable benefit to one's health. The powers of psychics, mediums and homeopathy are unproven.

Call me crazy, but I don't think anyone should be allowed to scam grieving people by claiming that their dead child can still talk to them from beyond the grave. It's cruel beyond belief, and the only way this works is for the charlatans in question to find out information in really underhanded ways, i.e. having shills eavesdrop on audiences to find out who they want to talk to, etc.

DA

"Psychics, mediums and homeopathy..." One of these is not like the other. Unless you meant telepathy?

(Homeopathy being alternative methods of healing and is a wide umbrella that includes everything from herbs and oils, to crystals and sound therapy.)

The crystals thing is pretty superstitious, though, isn't it? I mean some of the herbs probably work because of their actual chemical nature.

No, that is not what homeopathy means. Homeopathy is one particular type of alternative medicine that involves dilution of a remedy far beyond the point of efficacy. It is a pseudoscience, has no proven benefits for any condition, and as yet a powerful industry that preys on the ignorant.

No, I don't think homeopathy includes crystals and sound therapy. It's actually got a specific definition and it's based on the idea that the more you dilute something, the stronger it is... which not only makes zero sense, it's also not at all supported by science. So I guess in terms of efficacy (read: none), then yes, it is like many "alternative healing" methods such as crystals or sound therapy.

In many ways, I'd say homeopathy more harmful than believing in psychics because if you're ill and seek homeopathic treatment, you're not getting medical treatment that actually works. You're just wasting time and money on what is essentially snake oil.

I would say that it depends upon if you are at the end of your rope.

If you have a disease with no cure (according to science) and are chronic or terminal, you might be willing to try anything. And if on the chance something actually works, maybe it can become science.

Look, I like to think I have a healthy amount of skepticism, but I don't think you can say it's "cruel beyond belief" to enable some grieving people a type of closure or comfort that they may really need, something that allows them to move on in peace.

And sometimes it can cause more harm than good. Look up the late Sylvia Browne in relation to the Amanda Berry case.

This. Every time the police follow leads they get from a so-called psychic, they're wasting precious time, taxpayer money and manpower on a tip that might as well be a random guess. All of those resources are important in a kidnapping or murder case, and it's time, money and manpower they're NOT spending on actual leads generated by credible witnesses and police work.

It is if that comfort is false and you're simply taking their money.

Look, I've had loved ones who passed away. If there was a chance I could tell my grandma how much I love her and miss her, that would be wonderful. But I don't want to talk to some weasel charlatan pretending to be my grandmother, that's not comforting. If people want smoke blown up their asses, then... well, that's their business. But I think it's cruel to deceive people into believing you can give them their loved ones back when you can't. That's taking advantage of people when they're at a vulnerable, emotionally painful time in their lives.

A few years ago, one of my cousins died suddenly of a medical condition no one knew he had. His wife was scammed out of what little money he had put away for her by someone who contected on the Internet. The way I heard the story, the paranormal was NOT involved. The person who scammed her convinced her that my cousin had gone into some kind of business partnership with him and needed bailout/startup money because "he would have wanted this."

She had no legal recourse, in the end, because she had willingly given him the money. So, she's still poor... was poor to begin with, actually, even with that little bit in the will.

People who prey on the grieving are less than the slime leaking from a dog's infected anus after the dog has been eating Taco Bell. However, getting rid of psychics/paranormal types isn't going to get rid of it. It does happen in other areas.
