You got caught be the dragon bug (but dragons are awesome so who wouldn't). I enjoyed the first one but have not gotten to see the new one. Was not aware there was a tv series!

They are two seasons of 20 episodes each, taking place in the gap between the movies (but not needed to see the sequel; the series' continuity was crafted to progress in it's own way without creating plotholes related to the at-time hypothetic sequel.)
Also, a couple of shorts, a bit more tied with the first movie.
(A third season is said to be in the works, thought I don't know if it would take place between the second season and the second movie, or after the second movie? My sources fail me on this.)
