Are all fanartists as delusional as the ones in this thread? You're not "promoting the source material." The only people who buy fanart are already into the source material, and they're spending money on your work that they could be spending on licensed merch. That is exactly the opposite of promoting the source material.

Sell your shit for as much as the less scrupulous members of the fanbase are willing to pay for it, yay capitalism, but don't pretend that you're some kind of noble exception to intellectual property laws because ART.

The fucking hilarious part of this is that you guys would be the first to scream theft and bloody murder if someone decided to make icons out of your work and sell them. Somehow it doesn't count as free advertising if someone does it to you.

and you're an idiot for assuming that money going to fanart would otherwise be going toward licensed merch. if someone is commissioning a fanartist, it's because they have a personal and unique take on the characters involved that original art doesn't fulfill– including ships. you're telling me someone asking a fanartist to draw sherlock/john or whatever dumb tumblr pairing is popular at the moment would otherwise be buying... what exactly? are there "shippy" official artworks? paintings? digital renderings? cartoons?

the very reason fanartists exist is to fill a void the fandom feels for some kind of visual representation, of ships, of scenarios, of art styles... any number of things. licensed merch and fanart are not and have never been interchangeable.

Whatever you have to tell yourself to justify your theft, I guess. Just don't pretend you're doing the original creator a favor by stealing their stuff and selling it.
