and you're an idiot for assuming that money going to fanart would otherwise be going toward licensed merch. if someone is commissioning a fanartist, it's because they have a personal and unique take on the characters involved that original art doesn't fulfill– including ships. you're telling me someone asking a fanartist to draw sherlock/john or whatever dumb tumblr pairing is popular at the moment would otherwise be buying... what exactly? are there "shippy" official artworks? paintings? digital renderings? cartoons?

the very reason fanartists exist is to fill a void the fandom feels for some kind of visual representation, of ships, of scenarios, of art styles... any number of things. licensed merch and fanart are not and have never been interchangeable.

Whatever you have to tell yourself to justify your theft, I guess. Just don't pretend you're doing the original creator a favor by stealing their stuff and selling it.
