You know some people don't have that option, right? Some people have controlling, abusive families. Some people are shut ins due to medical issues. Some people have horrible jobs that take all of their time and most of their energy. Some people are too broke to do anything but work and watch television. Some people have social anxiety or depression that makes real life interaction more difficult.

Don't be a judgy judge.

They aren't judging OP, they are suggesting that Fandom is not the be-all and end-all of everything, which indeed it isn't. Quit being defensive.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, come off it. EVERYONE has the choice to focus on fandom or not. Especially if it isn't giving them any satisfaction.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
DA Hey, give it a rest. There are a lot of people who are in bad places that have found solace in fandom. People in the situations AYRT is talking about don't have a lot of options, and fandom is much more sociable than most internet pursuits.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently not for OP, though. Saying that someone has no or little choice but to continue to pursue something that makes them feel more lonely and depressed doesn't sound like wise advice to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT In OPs case I agree, but you were talking about everyone.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-14 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't agree. There are some people who literally don't talk to or see anyone in real life for long periods, because of where they live or medical issues. Only last week I saw an ad by a charity which claimed millions of people don't talk to anyone for days at a time.

These people can stop trying to make fandom friends online, but then they have no one at all, which isn't any better if they're lonely.

But that doesn't mean there is absolutely nothing you can do in real life that might be of use to you. Acting like your only choices are wallowing in a life of horror and abuse and the amazing wonderland that is fandom isn't realistic at all.

Wowza, you have very little empathy or imagination, don't you? For example, having a medical condition that means you can't leave the house without help is "wallowing in a life of horror and abuse"?

You do realize that not everyone is lucky enough to have the option of so-called "real life" that other people take for granted? In fact, there are a lot of people in this situation.

nayrt

so this means you have zero contact with other humans, ever? food just magically appears out of thin air, you do all your own cleaning (or else live in a landfill), every blood relation you have is horrible and abusive and you've cut them out of your life, you never went to school or made any friends while you were there...? And your windows are painted over, you never go outside, you don't even get to the doctor? Really?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-15 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
DA No, they are being far more positively helpful than you are. The idea that there is only fandom or nothing is incredibly naive, unhealthy and self-defeating an encouraging people to just keep plugging at it with no reward is not empathetic at all, it's just daft and shows massive lack of imagination and indeed of rational thought. Even if one only has the internet (which, frankly, I really, really doubt, almost no one is that cut off), there are scores of ways to connect that are not fandom related.
