I don't think having sex is going to make you a better writer. Experience helps, but a truly good writer can capture anything with or without the experience.

oh, i didn't mean the writing itself. no amount of sex can save that if it's shite.

what i meant is some experience might bring in a bit more variety into the sex on the page. and i'm specifically thinking of the huge fandoms where fanbrats all copy each other to get cliche boring sex written to the same old formula.

you're right, a truly good writer might not need first hand experience. but many professional writers go to extreme lengths for accuracy in fields they don't have previous experience in. otherwise readers who do have the knowledge will call them up on it.

Couldn't have said it better. There are so many fics where the sex scenes are either badly written or indistinguishable from dozens of others, and I always think they should just leave it out and make it pg-rated instead.

I'm not saying that it's those without experience who write those bad scenes, but I bet most of the good sex scenes are written by people with experience.

I dunno. I think a good imagination is more helpful. I had a roommate who had quite a lot of sex and wrote the most boring smut. I can only assume that she had boring sex. Having sex for the first time certainly didn't hurt my own sex scenes, but I wouldn't say it particularly helped, either.
