Depp absolutely refused to take voice lessons on the grounds that they were A WASTE OF HIS TIME. He claimed that he didn't want to spend hours and hours in front of a piano when he could be working on developing his character. I don't have a link to the article he said that it, but if I find it again, I'll cite it.
That said, considering he supposedly ditched music rehearsals to work on his character... I sure saw NO evidence that he worked on it at all. His entire character was >:|.

I imagine voice lessons would have taught how to hit a note straight on too, it's not like it's hard or anything.
And yeah, it's not like he tried emoting or anything as Sweeney. He was basically a zombie unless he was killing someone. Wow, so nuanced.

And the specific quote from page two:
"Instead, Depp ran as far from formal instruction as he could. ''I just didn't see the character developing with me doing scales in front of a piano and a vocal teacher going, 'No, no — bring it up from the bollocks,' '' he says. ''That kind of thing would have been a disaster. I would still be rehearsing right now. Or I'd have been fired.'"
Yes. That would have been a disaster. You know, as opposed to skipping voice lessons entirely.
