Seriously though, there *are* the characters out there that you're looking for...just maybe in different fandoms. I'm sorry you feel let down that, beneath the helmet, Samus isn't someone you can associate with...I always feel let down that young!Darth Vader isn't English like Sebastian Shaw is in "ROTJ"...but there are other English characters out there who are both 'empowered' and 'armoured' just as there are other strong, female black characters out there. It feels a tiny bit harsh to not like a character so much because they're different to the way you are.

I'm honestly not trying to be nasty here, I just think you've hit the wall of personal expectation vs. designer's ideas which is never nice for anyone.

Keep looking though and sorry for the fact that this is probably the last response you wanted.

I know there are other characters out there that fit the criteria... I just wish Samus could have been one of them. It doesn't change the fact that I love Samus dearly... I just feel like... why not do something more? Why make her blonde and blue-eyed and not try something really different? Even the green hair or purple hair or brownish-blonde hair would have been... I don't know, more interesting? It's hard to put it into words...

I really do sympathise and I'd hate to be in your position with regards to that. I do think that, however normal it might seem now, the reveal of Samus being a woman (blonde haired Viking or not) was a truly monumental moment - I fully acknowledge that, from a design point of view it was probably done to make her 'exotic' rather than anything else but I think it's a great moment...but then I realise that my heart wasn't at all at stake with this so I can't really comment further...

I am really sorry though that it didn't work out for you the way it could have.

I don't think the OP was saying she didn't like Samus because Samus wasn't black, I think she was saying that it would have made her (and a lot of others) feel empowered, because... in all honesty, you don't see very many badass black females in videogames. It would be nice to have a big-name one, because it isn't nice to feel marginalized.

Thank you for the link, it's much appreciated it. I remember coming across this and reading it just prior to the release of the Ghibli adaptation of "Earthsea" but it's always good to be reminded of these things.

Regardless of my opinion on the importance of Samus, I appreciate that you've linked this. Thank you once again.
