The Social Network might be a better example to use.

Since it's based on and around events that happened less than ten years before its release and there's a fair amount of fanfic.

I like RPF and don't have any objections to it in and of itself, but you have to admit that some fans are very creepy about it. Now, there always seem to be fans in every fandom, whether it involves fictional characters or real people, that don't understand or just don't respect boundaries, but you can see how that would be worse in the case of real people that can get harassed, insulted, threatened, etc. And some people just get creeped out at the thought of the public speculation about the private life of an actual person.

I think TSN is a bit of a special case because the movie is very dramatised, a lot of it is made up and the creators always stressed that and never said that it was a completely accurate depiction of events. So there's a very clear understanding in the fandom that you're writing fic about Mark Zuckerberg the character, not Mark Zuckerberg the real person. Compartmentalisation, if you will.

I just realized why there is so much RPF of the Social Network. Not that I've given it much thought, but there seems a bizarre amount of it.

Of course, if you like the idea of a biopic where the real life people are not only very still much around, but also still pretty young, you're much more likely to be the sort of person who enjoys RPF of the actors as well.

Or The Queen. People absolutely fawn over that and Helen Mirren and her performance but it just strikes me as so creepy - the Queen is a real, living woman, Charles, William and Harry are very much real and alive and to make a film about their reactions to the death of Diana just felt wrong. (And I say this as a person who really didn't like Diana very much).
