[Power Rangers Megaforce/Super Megaforce]

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I have literally no idea what the deal with this series or any of these pairings are. Is there some newsletter where I can sign up for more information, or...?

Since everyone has handled the why this secret is stupid and wrong, I will answer your question!

The show is the just finished airing season of Power Rangers. Airing for 2 years until the titles of Megaforce and Super Megaforce (creative they are not) Gia and Emma are the yellow and pink rangers. They have a special flower that they go find in the woods together. And then they have an argument about whether they should tell everyone that they are "best friends" or if they should keep it a secret. (And then an alien dominatrix bee turns the boys into her sex slaves and makes the girls have a dramatic argument that involves them ripping a photo of themselves in half but the power of their love friendship saves the day.) (Look, power rangers is weird.) And at the end they come out in a newspaper.

However, Jake is the black/green ranger, who has a crush on Gia (the blonde.) He... is a stereotypical nice guy. Who spends two seasons being That Guy. After two seasons of being annoyed by him and clearly having been dating Emma, Gia kisses him on the cheek.

And as Power Rangers is determined to be the fandom that breaks rule 34 and kills kink memes, there is not nearly enough porn.

Ah, thanks for the primer! That sounds really col. I've never been into Power Rangers in the past (at least not since I was a little kid) but this is almost enough to make me want to look into it.

The thing about power rangers is that there is a season for EVERYONE since there are so many different themes.

Cops? Try SPD. Magic? Mystic Force. Post apocalyptic future and a failbot mafia kid? RPM. Stoner werewolf who run a pizza place? Jungle Fury.

Also it is streaming on netflix and amazon prime and all the seasons are out on DVD. :D

While I can see the argument for the Gia/Emma queerbaiting undermining Jake/Gia as a pairing, that is NOT where the creepiness derives from. I could list all the problematic things Jake does over the course of the series, but it'd wind up being a damn dissertation, so I'm just going to link you here instead.

Wow, this is the absolute pettiest I have ever seen "blame the gays" get. Come on, anon, we're too busy sending flooding rains to Britain and causing earthquakes and shit, we don't have time to make people mad about crappy romance plots in c-list kids' shows.

But yeah nah, the way the show played out Jake/Gia would be textbook awful "dude deserves woman for existing" no matter what Ciara said in interviews.

Also, you seem to be misinformed as to what "queerbaiting" means, because every single joke I have seen Ciara make about Gia and Emma's ridiculous chemistry is clearly coming from a place that acknowledges the show isn't run by people who would let it go there. The "baiting" part of queerbaiting kind of hinges on cast and/or crew fostering a false hope.

Yes, I was logging in to say something similar. An actor joking about a ship or even outright expressing her preference for it is NOT the same as the people who make the creative decisions stringing audience along.

Also, Gia/Emma forever. I mean, COME ON. They have a special flower.

Ciara's joked in more than one interview about shipping her char with every char but Jake.

Gia is clearly disinterested. Her teammates seem to acknowledge her disinterest. In the epi where Robo Knight is going around asking what love is she gives a very sarcastic go ask Jake and continues with her workout routine. When Robo Knight goes to talk to Jake, even he with his limited knowledge of humans, says he won't learn anything from Jake. I haven't watched all of Super Megaforce, but from what I understand it doesn't get much better than what happened in Megaforce except that she kisses him on the cheek in the end.

I get that they're in high school and Jake has a lot to learn, but he should've learned on the show. The show, in other seasons, had guys who needed to learn similar lessons to the ones Jake needed to learn and did a fantastic job of showing that, of letting the chars grow and change. Jake didn't get growth, didn't get change, didn't learn to treat Gia as a friend and a person who's disinterest should be acknowledge and honored. Instead the show went 'haha' Gia doesn't like him but he likes her isn't it funny? It's not funny. It's not romantic.

Unrelated question: Since the last time I watched the US version of Power Rangers was about two decades ago (and that was probably something old because I only watched it in my country's dub on TV) and have recently gotten into the Japanese originals: Are the US versions completely different or not? I've seen that the toys are the same in some cases. Do the American versions just use the toy-marketable gadgets of some older Japanese season and build their own plot around it or is the plot similar as well?

Was just wondering.

[personal profile] thezmage 2014-12-17 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Some seasons yes, some seasons no. Lightspeed rescue through Operation Overdrive were pretty close to the originals with some detours of varying importance.

Okay, thanks!

Depends on the season! Some are really similar and some have absolutely nothing to do with each other. They all takes aspects of the sentai, but sometimes its just the fight footage and sometimes its practically word for word translations. Gaoranger/Wild Force and Shinkenger/Samurai are probably the most similar. But Super Megaforce is sadly not about space pirates. Everyone loves space pirates.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely - space pirates were what got me back into the Sentai fandom in the first place!

After looking it up, I think I watched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers when I was a kid. Remember almost nothing except that I really liked the Yellow Ranger.

Thank you as well!

Dude, take a step back and reassess your life. You have so much wrong going on here that I don't know where to start. Just look at your life, look at your choices, and admit you like a problematic thing without bashing the best chemistry two characters have had on this show is years.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Nice gay bashing, asshole.

Did this get linked to a power rangers community or something? Seeing a lot of unfamiliar faces

There aren't that many toku secrets, but those are the only ones I comment on even though I've been a member here for years.

I know I might get yelled at for this but...

[personal profile] sky_queen3 2014-12-17 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
Is it wrong for me to say I almost... fuck it, do feel bad for Azim Rizk (Jake's actor for the few who don't know) as there are some people who don't separate character from actor and end up thinking he's a creep in real life when it's really the fault of the writers? I'd been thinking that for a while, am I messed up?

*dons flame suit for the next part as I know I'm going to get roasted* I don't mind the fandom/fanon version of both pairings (where the 'unfortunate implications' are worked on in the case of Jake/Gia), the canon one I have mixed feelings on.

Re: I know I might get yelled at for this but...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with feeling sorry for the actor in all this. Like you said, it's not his fault that his character is written the way it was.

No roasting from me. TBH, I kind of feel this way about Martha/Ten fics from Doctor Who due to how he treated her in S3. I rarely read fics with the pairing, but give me one that manages to resolve many the issues that lay between them during/after S3, and I'm on board with it. But one that doesn't at least address the fact that Ten was a major douchebag to Martha? No I can't read that.
