Spoilers?

I haven't seen more than a handful of trailers for Gone Girl, but this spoils what seems to be a pretty major plot point, according to the tvtropes summary

That comes with the community warning.

And yet the community ethos still values warning for spoilers, and every Friday there's a special section devoted to spoilery secrets. The warning you refer to is not a banner saying "there will be spoilers if you click this," but is rather an admission that things aren't always caught. Therefore, when unmarked spoilers do come through, it is the polite and conscientious thing to mention it so that people can make informed decisions. The same thing applies to NSFW stuff and everything in the failbar. Things slip through all the time, but something is usually done when they do so.

IOW, you seem to have mistaken a general warning for a specific one.

FS is not a polite community, though.
(And secret 7 deserves a spoilers warning too for the image used, but hey, complaining about spoiler is the best way to get some trolls to post more spoilers so I gave up a long time ago)

FS is far more polite than a lot of other places where they deliberately go out of their way to ruin everything (ie Tumblr).

A general warning is more than sufficient, to specifically spoiler tag is a bonus if it happens. Because it's no different than going into tumblr tags and seeing a new episode or series spoiled via text post or gif. You come into this community knowing there is a chance for spoilers, so don't cry your entitled fandom tears over it when you get one.

Sure in an ideological fandom world spoilers would always be hidden and nothing would hurt. But that's not the way it is, and it won't change. How about rather than every freakin' post someone crying over it you go to the mods about it if you really want change.

I believe specific spoiler warnings are added if the OP requests it. Case doesn't know every single fandom in creation.

eh, the book is over two years old and the movie's been out for nearly two and a half months. a spoiler warning would have still been nice but at this point you've gotta pick your battles

Well, I've always considered the spoiler threshold for movies to be a month after the dvd release.

And I'm not really complaining, as this revelation turns the movie from one I was completely uninterested in into one that actually sounds worth checking out. It's just a little early for me to find this out.

A month after the DVD release? In this day and age?

Yep, in this day and age with its increased focus on the home video market, inter connectivity, and increased reliance on plot twists, a longer spoiler period is required

Movie was just released in my country this weekend. We don't get Mockingjay pt 1 until May, either.

(I did get to see the Hobbit though last weekend, before my American friends, but man, wish we got more movies on time)

It's not like you can't pirate.

Re: Spoilers?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:18 am (UTC)(link)

Re: Spoilers?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Fwiw it occurs at the halfway point, it's not an ending twist or anything.

What's with all the people whining about spoilers in all the post anyone? There are comm warnings on EACH POST and in the profile. If you don't want spoilers don't come into a community that gives them.
