I don't consider her a feminist icon either, but I did find her waaaay more interesting and likable then whoever ben affleck's character was. And I kinda liked that she got away with the whole thing in the end.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Why would you like that she got away with it in the end?

THANK YOU! Couldn't agree more.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Why am I not surprised feminists would rally around her.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Feminism isn't one thing. If you look, you can find feminists who protest against abortion rights.

Because you know very little about feminism.

Weird. I remember when the book first came out, I saw so much hate for it in feminist circles.

I think wrote this secret in my sleep.

What gets to me is how people who defend her point out all the stuff she says about Nick in the beginning of the book. How she wrote about how he was cold, selfish and mentally and physically abusive. But here's the thing, all that, her diary, was made up. She wrote a story to paint Nick as an abusive husband who had the potential and the motive to kill his wife with the hopes that the police would find the diary before Nick did. The diary was part of her frame up plan.

The only things we know about Nick to be true is that 1) he cheated on his wife and 2)he wasn't paying attention to her. (Otherwise he would have seen her plan coming.) The rest could be Amy's lies and a safe bet they are indeed lies.

And I am sorry, cheating and ignoring your wife aren't grounds for being framed for murder and getting the chair. Divorce? Yes. State sanctioned execution? No.

I haven't seen the movie, but in the book she actually admits everything in the journal is a lie, even her fear of blood.

I've only read the book, which is written largely in internal monologue, but there the author seems to expressly tell you 'please do not mistake this character for a glorious feminist role model - look at her gross attitudes towards other women she encounters'.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Jesus Christ, that's depressing. Some folks really do just see signifiers instead of people, huh?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Certainly when they talk about "feminists" yes.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I fucking love Amy. I think she is a fascinating character, but oh God, is she evil and NOT a good feminist icon.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
She is the best villain to come along in a LONG time. But she is indeed a villain.

ia but love the character regardless because women rarely get to play roles like it and rosamund nailed it. not as dramatic as glenn close's bunny boiler, but memorable in that her complexity dwarves the rest of the casts's.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I've been seeing that bloody sex scene in gifs on tumblr with way too many girls going all "YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS" "u go gurl" etc

(Anonymous) 2014-12-17 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
...please tell me you're making that up.

I mean. As one of those girls saying that, I have no defense other than that the scene was incredibly attractive. I could watch those minutes and the scene of her washing the blood off in the shower quite happily for a while.

Spoilers?

[personal profile] thezmage 2014-12-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen more than a handful of trailers for Gone Girl, but this spoils what seems to be a pretty major plot point, according to the tvtropes summary

That comes with the community warning.

eh, the book is over two years old and the movie's been out for nearly two and a half months. a spoiler warning would have still been nice but at this point you've gotta pick your battles

Fwiw it occurs at the halfway point, it's not an ending twist or anything.
