Transformers (anything except G1)

^ I'm also not familiar with the Unicron Trilogy, but mostly I can talk about anything other than the G1 continuities. I'm kind of desperate for someone who doesn't want to talk about the IDW comics, because I've never read them and have no intentions to (they look like perfectly good stories, just not to my taste).

I think TFP Starscream and Megatron was an abusive situation that was sometimes played up for laughs and that kind of bothered me. Otherwise I loved TFP. Having Peter Cullen as Optimus and Frank Welker as Megatron made the show worth it for me. Steve Blum as Starscream was totally a bonus.

Yeah, TFP!Megatron/Starscream was played for laughs in ways I really don't think it should have been. It kind of feels like the series wobbled erratically between being aimed at preteens and being aimed at adults, and its quality suffered for it. On the one hand, it was trying to be an action-adventure show for preteens, and there's only so dark you can go with that; on the other hand, it kept trying to be dark and serious like you'd honestly expect from the "alien race has been at war for millions of years" concept.

I admit I don't have the nostalgic attachment to Peter Cullen and Frank Welker doing their respective characters' voices that so many people do, but I do think that whoever did the casting did really well at it. And the character designs were well-done too - distinctive and representative at the same time. I tend to have a hard time telling characters apart in TV shows, but that wasn't an issue at all with TFP.

The StarScream/Megatron thing worked okay until the final season, that was when they really decided that Starscream would hold the comedy-relief ball and just ran with making him the Decepticon Butt Monkey. Up until then, while what Starscream suffered in terms of abuse (and his horrible acts against Megatron too, because I don't like Woobie!Scream) was handled pretty well.

Personally the thing that bugs me is the lack of consequences for Arcee when she tried to pull the classic villain move of trying to kill Starscream when he was a surrendered prisoner and using the old villain-move of trying to make it look like he was killed while attempting escape. Her punishment was Bumblebeen looking at her in a mournful way.

Why don't you list the continuities you do want to talk about or are familiar with? I'm guessing you want to talk about Animated or Prime, or maybe even Beast Wars, but I could also try and guess that you'd just love to talk about any of the other comics ever published by Marvel or even Funpub.

Anywho, there's a fansub for Armada out now in case you ever wanted to start UT. I already saw the dub, but I'll be rewatching this version at some point to see if the original actually is the more enjoyable/tolerable version.

I should have been more clear there, you're right. I apologize. I am familiar with and would be happy to talk about anything except the Unicron Trilogy series and the various G1 relatives (the original series, Beast Wars/Beast Machines, pretty much all the comics that aren't direct tie-ins to another series). That is, RID 2001, the live-action movies, Animated, Prime, Rescue Bots, and the expanded universe for all of those except the live-action movies, and I'd be willing to speculate about RID 2015. I figured listing the two I wasn't familiar with would be easier than the six I was; I'll know better for next time. And thank you for the Armada fansub link, I'll have to try that out.

No big! Just wanted to make sure is all! I'm only just getting into franchise mysel, so about the only things I'd feel like I even know what I was talking about would be TFP, Beast Wars, and Rescue Bots. I'm kind of wondering how RID2015 tonal shift from TFP will go, and if it will be consistent about that. I actually liked the previews I've seen, and the animation reminding me of Tron's helps.

What parts of the Aligned universe have you gone through? I want to try the games and the book(s), but I'm not quite sure of tie-in quality being worthwhile.
