At my school, there's always a huge student protest whenever tuition goes up, and there's always a huge student protest when classes are cut and teachers are laid off. The protesters keep saying we should cut the salaries of the regents, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to how much it costs to keep this school going. I've phrased this more politely in the past, saying things like "I think the school should raise tuition if the state won't chip in to help," but honestly, I feel like these constant protests are childish and unrealistic.

So, which UC do you go to (j/k)

More seriously... I agree in the sense that cutting regents' salaries isn't a viable solution, and unfortunately the actual best solution (increasing state funding) is apparently not an option for broader political reasons, but I can't get mad at them for protesting, because it legitimately does fucking suck.

It might be a drop in the bucket, but it is a good morale booster to cut top salaries when those lower down are suffering and a morale disaster to keep them up. That applies across every business and public service. It creates a sense of solidarity that the pain is being shared, and more importantly is being understood. It helps everyone pull together and it helps bury divisions. Not doing so creates divisions, creates unnecessary flash points, and lets a sense of injustice fester, all of which have a negative effect on productivity and smooth running.

People are more likely to accept unpopular measures if they see that all groups are being affected by them instead of there being a lot of people at the bottom being affected, and business as usual at the top. Its just the way people are. Actual evidence or facts are redundant to the sentiment.

ia.

If an organization takes a hit, it's fair for all levels to take the hit.
