My brother has made a similar argument, though not in religious terms. He's an EMT, so he has to deal with folks who're in really bad shape and clearly suffering, but are being kept alive because their families don't want to "kill Grandma." The way he sees it, these folks are being robbed of the right to die with dignity rather than slowly whimper their way to the grave.

This would be why I'm such an advocate for people having living wills, so that if something happens where the only option is to be kept alive, they can express their wish not to be kept alive that way in writing.
