(Anonymous) 2014-12-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)While losing his dad means that he turns into an impulsive, emotional screw-up until Pike sets him on the right course.
Where's his mother in all this?
I can buy that Kirk would turn out different, but I find it kind of sexist that they don't really delve into what happened to him besides losing his father. As though boys are destined to turn into fucked up men with a man to guide them.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)I agree that there were episodes where Kirk was the emotional one arguing against Spock and that the new films are drawing on that. Those are my favorite parts of the new films and what made me finally warm up to the new Kirk and Spock. But it doesn't leave much room for anyone else. And that great dynamic is lost when it would be so easy to replicate.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-19 04:56 am (UTC)(link)Though that's also kinda insulting to his mother.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-19 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)Though I do think it's implied that Winona was probably neglectful on some level, but I also think it's not a surprise that Kirk would be different, growing up with different (possibly abusive) parents, after a relatively traumatic birth. That... just seems logical. It would be weirder to me if he were exactly the same person as in TOS.
