maybe OP likes writing about arousal and sexy things involving the body parts they [presumably] have, rather than the ones they like touching IRL

This is definitely part of it.

The attitude I keep running up against, is that woman-on-woman is something that can only be enjoyed by men and gay/bisexual women, and obviously straight women can only enjoy porn/erotica that features men - because if you are attracted to men, why would you want your smut to not feature men?

This line of thought seems to be prevalent in pretty much every fandom I've been in. In fact some time past, I bought into it enough that it did cause me to question my own sexual identity... Only to reach the conclusion that yes, I am (and always have been) straight. Best I could ever verbalise this thought, is that when it comes to smut, most people seem to be 'voyeuristic', whereas I am 'narcissistic' (ugh bad word choice, but can't find any better ones) - no matter how hot I may find guys, I am not interested in reading/writing/fantasising about them sexing each other up, with no ladyparts involved.

Mostly I write fluff rather than smut (which isn't to say I don't try to create sexual chemistry between characters, just that I don't go into graphic detail about it), but I'll read all sorts. Turns out the handful of m/m fics I enjoy are all G-rated and/or the pairing comes very much secondary to a strong gen plot, usually with a wider cast of characters.

OP, I'm not sure where you're running up against that attitude, but there are so very many different ways folks enjoy smut, and in fact so many different ways a single person enjoys their smut within a single *scene*, it's just plain ridiculous for anyone to try to categorize or pigeonhole people's choices.

Believe me, I did a sex panel at a con once, and getting anything that didn't resemble utter scattershot on any question of the survey was impossible. E.g. some people read smut without being either voyeuristic *or* narcissistic (identifying with one of the characters). They claim they aren't even part of the scene and are just absorbing the action from very far away.

Me, I just enjoy what I enjoy, in the the moment of what I'm in the mood for. There is no wrong way to enjoy smut. There is no traveling a line through the pathways of our enjoyment to the underlying libido. It's just not that simple.

I'll admit, sometimes, when I'm writing id-fic, I do learn something new about myself, but usually it's about my own motivations in writing the scene wrt past sexual history. I'll think, oh, *that* past event, that's where that came from. You know?

Anyway, obviously, you should write what you want to write and screw the jerks who have anything to say about it. Follow your muse.

OP, the interesting thing is, when they've done actual studies of male and female arousal (like, hooked participants up to sensors and measured their physical arousal while they watched porn/read smut), they found that straight women are almost always turned on by both men AND women. Straight women get as hot and bothered by "lesbian" porn as men and gay/bisexual women do.

That attitude that's out there runs completely opposite to what's real. I think there's a lot of denial going on with it and also maybe even a little bit of the good old sexist devaluation of the feminine.

SA

I realized I should note the reason I put "lesbian" in quotes there is because a lot of porn that's categorized as "lesbian" really isn't lesbian to me because it's made by men with men as the audience in mind.
