Eeeh. I think that can depend on the fandom and the ship. Like, in a fandom where there's shipping wars or even just really overly invested shippers, you can wind up getting harassed even if you aren't a big name. Also, if you have a controversial ship, you can wind up getting harassed. I'm in a fandom that has an incest ship, and even people who are only casually involved will get people coming through and shitting on them for being "disgusting" and "evil" and "problematic." And about a decade ago, I was in a fandom with a terrible ship war, where you were asking for trouble if you basically posted any shipfic at all.

That said, most of the time you're right.
