Seriously? That is kind of an overly bitchy response to the secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret maker earned it with their derogatory characterisation of authors who don't cater to their wishes.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, I forgot, writers should never dare be criticized at fs.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I didn't say that. The secret maker rather than giving some sort of valid reason for wanting to know about character deaths took a snotty swipe at writers who don't warn. The two not the same thing. One merits thoughtful discussion. The other does not.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You act like being called pretentious if they don't cater to a reader's wishes is legit criticism.

It's not.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's true though. So many readers want their trigger-warned-out-the-wazoo special hugboxes it's a wonder they can function reading conventional published fiction.

The OP's sideswipe at "pretentiousness" and "cheap writing" is just an additional cherry on the sundae.

Characters in published works fully belong to authors. Characters in fandom are mine. I know them, I have headcanons and I like them. It hurts to see them hurt. I'm pro warning even for a canon death. It's a considerate thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Characters in fandom are mine.

Oh? Are you a published author who only reads fanfiction of their own work?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You're the sort of person that makes me feel weird about being in fandom. Play with the toys in the sandbox, yes. Own the toys, no.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahahahaha!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's kind of a hilarious thought. Who is it, do you think? Diana Gabaldon, or Anne Rice?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
They...don't stop belonging to the author just because there's a fandom around them.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt
The point is they don't belong to fic writters either. Anyway, it's not logic, it's emotions. I care about my favorite characters and that's all there's to it.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a dumb opinion

I read scads of published fiction, much of it with characters dying. I also like warnings for character death in fic. It's not because I can't handle character death, it's because I'd prefer to skip shit I know I won't enjoy when I'm looking for my dumb fannish entertainment

But warning for character death has been a thing for years. I laugh when people want stuff like eye contact or wrists or whatever warned for, but character death has always been one of the big things to warn for (along with underaged sex and non-con). Unless I've been hanging out on a totally different internet for the past fourteen years.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Some people go overboard with wanting to be warned for ridiculous things, but there are a few major points that it's only good manners to warn for. I'm a fan of the 'highlight to read' warnings so if something does spoil a plot point you can choose not to read the warning.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
yeah but who wants to read conventional published fiction? it's garbage

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret was an overly bitchy response to people who don't agree with them on how to approach character death.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - IMO, no. It's one thing to ask for character death warnings, another thing to denigrate all authors who don't have them. You can do one without the other, and OP choose not to.
