If I am reading a fic about Dean Winchester, and he is killed off with no warning, I will assume the author is an asshole who can only get an emotional reaction out of people by killing someone off. But mostly an asshole.

lol

Aren't you precious. Besides, Dean gets killed every other season, do you write angry letters to the ptb every time that happens too?

There's an inherent difference between canon and fanfic, though. People search out fanfic looking for something in particular, and something like character death is often NOT what the person is looking for.

(And sometimes people intentionally spoiler themselves just so that they can avoid canon character death, so.)

Killing Dean or Sam or Castiel is a plot device in a canon where no character is safe. Suggesting a fic writer is crummy for using a canon trope is a dubious critism at best.

That's.... not in any way remotely what I said? I'm really confused. Comment misfire?

Yes. I think people are forgetting that we search out fic that meet our specific wants. If we don't want to read a fic that features the death of a character we like, then the tagging systems on archives like AO3-- when used properly-- allow us to skip that fic and find one that better suits our needs at the time.

Yeah, plus AO3 allows writers to Choose Not to Warn, so they can avoid spoilers and people worried about character death can still have a heads up that it might happen in the fic.
