And do you think this of RL authors too, OP?

Honestly, I really HATE it when authors tag for major character death because it ruins the twists and turns of the story for me.

The best compromise I've seen is for authors to put a note at the beginning of the fic that they've left the "triggering" warnings at the end of the first chapter for anyone who wants to read it.

That way, people who want to be unspoiled can easily avoid them, while people who are worried about this sort of thing can go ahead and check.

I think "Major Character Death" is okay, but asking for them to specify which character is too far.

On the other hand, if they have warned that the fic is "dark" or whatever already, I'd think the possibility of death is a given and needing them to specify that someone dies is whiny.

Yeah, still not going to warn for character death in my stories. If you can't figure out that a lot of my stories involve wars, and that people die in wars, even--gasp!--important ones, that's on you.

Basically all published writers don't warn for character death so I'm not too bothered by you saying it's a "cheap trick" and "pretentious," OP.

No offense but I am more than happy to be grouped with basically every great writer to have ever existed.

More of a compliment than anything.

If I am reading a fic about Dean Winchester, and he is killed off with no warning, I will assume the author is an asshole who can only get an emotional reaction out of people by killing someone off. But mostly an asshole.

IA

It's not like characters deaths are even surprising in most stories, since the setting usually implies that someone could die, so the how (and the who and even the when) is far more important than anything and that's why a warning doesn't spoil anything.

But most fics that don't warn for character death are the kind of "look how happy they are... and here, something kills them unexpectedly".
I just saw one like that a week ago. It started as fluff fic with a confession and many promises and then, surprise! Both die and that's the end. And the fic was supposed to be "fluff with some angst" and "romance".

That's not good writing, just a cheap trick to get reactions.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm confused... how does that make one a bad writer? Real books don't warn. Movies don't warn.

Or is that where the pretention comes in? Good versus trying too hard or something?

I don't assume they're a bad writer or pretension. I would assume they forgot the warning though. And if someone requests one and they say tough shit, then I assume they're an asshole.

However, I do think "author chooses not to warn" is a warning in and of itself.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)

If you can't handle the idea that the fic you're reading might have unexpected plot twists or surprises, that's fine but I don't think authors need to cater to your specific wants. I take it you don't read any published fiction? How about watching TV shows or movies?

story somewhat related

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-12-21 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so sad to learn that one Trigun character dies because I didn't see that episode yet, that I left a review along the lines: "put some warnings". Or was it "spoilers"? However it turns out that no one warns for this character in the fandom and everyone've watched it ages ago, so I flamed the author for no reason. Poor author.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If you insist upon being warned for major character death in fics, I'll assume you're an entitled, self-absorbed brat that can barely function in everyday life.

If you *ask* to be warned for major character death in fics due to legitimate triggers, then you have my sympathy.

In any case, the best solution is a "choose not to warn" header put on fics, so readers can proceed at their own risk once reading the story summary.

I'm ignoring the OPs wording here, but I do prefer my fics to have a warning.
I read fic to enjoy myself and I really don't enjoy the character(s) I'm readint eh fic for dying, that said, there is a difference between reading a fic where the summary already tells me a character gets cancer or is a soldier. If there is no warning there, I skim to the end to check. With topics like that I'd honestly prefer a warning (I love my angst, but I do need a happy ending), but I get why the author would choose not to.

NOW on the other hand, if the summary sounds like fluff and it starts like fluff and suddenly BAM character gets hit by a car and dies, I'll get pissed. That's not what I signed up for when I started that fluffy fic! (Don't usually comment on it, though. Just close the tab and stew in my anger, while looking for a real fluff fic to erase the other one frommy memory)

It's different of course with books.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I just think the author's a douchebag. In fanfic, if a major character dies, please warn for it so that I can avoid your story. Of course, in just regular fiction, anything is fair game.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't think the comparison to original fic that so many people are using here is a good one. There are all sorts of things that get tagged/labelled/warned for in fanfic that you don't get in original fic. Things such as pairings and rating.... Things like A/B/O. I honestly don't get where this idea that fanfic should be treated like original fic comes from.

I remember once years ago reading an argument by someone that didn't think she should have to put pairing labels on her fic, because of this argument....original fic doesn't have pairing labels, so why should fanfic? In her case, she was writing an unpopular pairing, and knew that if she labeled for it, people wouldn't read it, and that made her mad.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, especially since the authors who had that attitude had fics that really didn't hold up on a second reading once the shock of the death wore off. And to me it's not like knowing a character will die makes the death any less sad.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
It reeks of that snotty attitude some people have where they insist that they can't warn for things like rape because it would ruin the story. If the quality of your fanfic hinges on surprise death/rape/torture, it... might not be a very good fanfic.

It's one thing to want warnings for character death, but labeling any writer who doesn't tell you major spoilers is a bad writer is just silly. Lots of authors don't write stories the way I prefer them, there's no need to stamp one's feet and complain about how awful they are not to see things my way.
