I try to warn for things, because I think people come to fandom as members of a COMMUNITY, whereas they engage with movies and books and such as an AUDIENCE. They are different relationships with different rules. When I see a movie or read a book, I paid for it. When I read fanfiction, it's free. It's a different relationship between creator and reader, and I think co-members of fandom should use certain rules of politeness with regard to each other. Because let's face it, fandom sometimes goes in terrain I've never seen a book or movie go (admittedly, I haven't read everything), like mpreg, for example, and whumping.

I skip anything that 'author chooses not to warn' because I don't understand what they're not warning for. Rape? Mpreg? Pedophilia? Death? I don't know, and some are squicks I'd rather not encounter in fandom fun reading space. That's just me. I don't know which mine they're going to make me walk on, so I skip the fic because I'd rather not risk it.
