Wow, am I the fic writer here who always warns for character death, because to me it's a considerate thing to do?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's your prerogative. But it's many writers prerogative to not spoil their own stories by giving away major plot points.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
well that's because you're good people, anon.

People choosing not to warn can also be good people. It's not a moral issue; stop trying to pretend it is.

THIS.

Everything doesn't need to be a values judgement, ffs.

This this

Yes it is? If you value your story over the mental well-being of your readers, you're pretty much an asshole. Not a kick-puppies asshole, but still an asshole. There is no reason not to tag for things as the end of the story, to give people the option of knowing what they're getting into.

I consider "I Choose Not to Warn" plenty of warning. I acknowledge that warnings exist, and that triggers exist (I have a few myself). If I'm an asshole for making that decision, I'm an asshole. People have been creating works for millennia. I'd rather work in that grand tradition than try to cover every little tiny thing people want warning for nowadays.

I find it amusing that in an age where if you spoiler something, you're terrible if it's an original work, NOT spoiling things is heinous in terms of a fanwork. *shakes head*

"Choose Not to Warn" is still a warning, though, and equally as good. It's people who do nothing, no warnings at all, that are the problem.

Also, canon spoilers are different from fanfiction spoilers for obvious reasons.

nope. they're complete dickwads. but it's okay, i just leave a comment ripping apart their work. i don't flame...they can easily brush that off. i aim for the heart.

I warn for it too, for the same reasons. People who don't warn for ~my art~ reasons really overestimate the artistic merit for their fanfiction. We've almost certainly read those stories before, all we want to know is if someone dies.
