What if someone isn't signed up for AO3 though?

I say that because I'm not a registered user and so I really appreciated it when I saw an author that did it this way.

I don't really see why it's such a big deal for potential readers to have to scroll to the end of the chapter to read the more spoiler-y warnings to be honest.

Well, it takes two minutes to sign up for an account, and then you aren't expecting authors to cater to your wishes just because you prefer not to be spoiled for character deaths (which is a minority opinion). There is a reason Major Character Death is one of AO3's short list of required warnings!

SA

I'm all for fic writers not wanting to spoil their stories up front if they prefer not to, but there are plenty of writers who are find with warning for character death. I have two stories with at least one character death in them, and, since in both cases the death occurs in the first few paragraphs of the story, I really can't even summarize them without saying both that there is a character death and who dies.

Warning for a death that takes place in the first few paragraphs isn't a spoiler, though. It's being expected to warn for the culmination of the plot that's controversial.

Last time I tried, though, it told me I had to wait over a day for confirmation. And then when I finally got the email, it just led me to a 404.

Plus, I don't really see how it's asking author's to cater -- you're just putting the warnings in a different place, right? It's not like it's a mountain of extra work.

Just put in the top authors note of the first chapter: "Spoilery warnings in the author's note at the end of the chapter for those interested"

And then put the warnings there.

But it's okay to expect authors to cater to your wishes if yours is the majority opinion?

No. I am 100% in favor of authors using Choose Not to Warn if they want to avoid spoiling a character death ahead of time. As long as they're following the rules of the space they're in, it's completely up to the author how they wish to present their story.

Exactly.

Er, unless they've removed the "Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings" option, then no.. warning for a major character death isn't required on AO3.

*checks* Still there. (Thank goodness.)

Um, yes? You either have to use the required warnings or CNTW?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's not required. You can click the "chose not to use archive warnings" tickybox.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but if you have major character death in your story, you are required to either tag MCD or CNTW. You can't just not warn. So yes, it is a required warning.
