It's not like characters deaths are even surprising in most stories, since the setting usually implies that someone could die, so the how (and the who and even the when) is far more important than anything and that's why a warning doesn't spoil anything.

But most fics that don't warn for character death are the kind of "look how happy they are... and here, something kills them unexpectedly".
I just saw one like that a week ago. It started as fluff fic with a confession and many promises and then, surprise! Both die and that's the end. And the fic was supposed to be "fluff with some angst" and "romance".

That's not good writing, just a cheap trick to get reactions.
