I'm confused... how does that make one a bad writer? Real books don't warn. Movies don't warn.

Or is that where the pretention comes in? Good versus trying too hard or something?

Real books and movies also invent their own characters and settings. Fanfic writers pretty much by definition are hacks, since they piggyback off of someone else's work. With that understood, there are also a host of conventions associated with the genre, one of which is to warn if you're going to kill off a major character.
