It really kind of made me facepalm that a movie held up as ~THE~ gay movie was centered around such a lame, dull not-even-romance between dull, unsympathetic, unlikeable characters, in which their lives suck because they're shallow dipshits and then they ruin their wives' lives because their lives apparently revolve around some random affair they had that one time, and then there is Tragic Gay Death.

With lots of het sex scenes, of course.

Exactly. I remember fans of it saying they had to watch it repeatedly to convince themselves that the guys were in love. It was just so subtle and not like those typical love stories where people actually behave lovingly toward each other, lol. I found it hard to believe they were even in lust, with about thirty seconds of random tent sex they could have had with anyone and one really tryhard face-smashing kiss. Why anyone, much less three different people, would fall in love with someone like Ennis in particular was never explained. The hype was so ridiculous. There are so many better movies.
